This is how I was feeling a few years ago when I got into my “vintage” phase. I am a writer and a creative person at heart. Up until that time I had always found a way to express myself with pen and paper but there came a time that as I headed out for book signings, conferences and speaking engagements that I realized one thing. In looking at the ladies around me they had style. They had flare.  Yes. It was painfully obvious. As writers we are considered “personalities” – and I had none!

At least not when it came to style – when it came to style I was a complete fashion dunce. This was about the time that I began writing for a really fabulous designer and upon our first meeting he seemed to critique my entire existence upon one examination.

“So, what kind of things do you want me to blog about for Fashion Week?” I said. “Hmm . . .” he replied seemingly in deep thought about my question. “Something is missing.” Huh? I thought.

Knowing designers can be a tad eccentric I thought nothing of it until he pulled out this vintage ladies watch from his sample drawer. “There that looks nice.” He said placing it on my wrist. “Um, thanks.” I said thinking that the worst was over.

From here he continued to completely re-make my outfit with odds and ends from around his office. Even calling in his assistant for what he referred to as “a true emergency.”

Before I knew it, my upswept pony tail was hanging at my shoulders, there was a scarf around my neck and I had a new pair of suede pumps. I walked in feeling like I had been thrown into the fashion-twilight zone . . . but I walked out feeling like a new woman.

With a new sense of style and self, I began to take those little designer meetings to heart and developed a love for vintage and modern combined. Here’s what I learned . . .

Mix Old with New

I used to think that I was going to pull off a look it had to all “match”.  But today I know, thanks to a very un-shy designer, that sometimes the un-uniform can “work”. For instance, pair a vintage ladies watch with a new pair of blue jeans for an instant classic chic look.

Remember that vintage watches have survived for many decades by being treated well and have obviously been cared for by it’s owner.
